OUROBOROS of GREED Progress, Profit and Productivity In cycles of consumptions, the dollar and the power it brings, are the everlasting sources of pain and desire. We are driven by the desire for more money, more knowledge, more power. Does progress only exist in a corporate, profit-driven, dollar-valued definition? How does one consider the only progress seen in improvement of production, when lives can be productive without financial incentive? What happens when the only profits come from others? Ourobori Americana: Progress, Profit and Productivity , 2025. Gouache and acrylic on paper, 18"x 24". To consider the work we do day in, day out... from raising children, to doing laundry, dishes and house work, to our hobbies and talents and our desires to learn more... to consider that not of value unless you can put a 'dollar value' on it excludes the legitimate acts of that work. How do you value the hard and tenacious practice that a musician dedicates, when it does not pay literally? What of the toiling engineer who must go through trial and error, how does that no represent progress... whether it leads to financial benefits or not? Evaluation should rest on the journey, not the outcome. A dance, a craft of art, and song, an athletic play... none of these have inherent value one can calculate or charge, yet there are people out there who spend their whole lives doing just this, evaluating other peoples work at the expense of others for their own profit. A financial system that depends on the exploitation of the laborer, built on speculation and over-evaluation, and one that puts productivity over progress becomes an empty self-fulfilling prophecy that eventually fails in a recession on the dime of ordinary people.

BESTIARY ENTRY I The Horn of Desire Illumination: Unicorn , 2025. Gouache, gold leaf, 6" x 4". Deep in the recesses of the forest, beckoned by the temptations of a virgin maiden, the unicorn becomes a beast of guile and prestige. The mythological stag with its elusive nature must be tricked in hunt with the lure of a pure heart. Desired only for the properties their single horn comprises, the unicorn no longer appears.

SIGN*, 2025 A sign, in its display, is an invitation to sit, and receive a message of intent. Symbol of power, as it steals attention or aversion, becomes a virus for those who see.

MEDIEVAL RE-VISIONS Agent of Change - The Noble Knight The human condition of culture is pervasive through art, and demonstrates itself through a play between old and new expressions, in all forms of art and in all regards, through the very act of imitation . Feudal institutions, like Monasteries, preserved cultures and technologies alike during the Medieval era of the European Middle Ages. From early blacksmithing knowledge, to bread and wine-making, and arguably most importantly, Literacy...and with that illustrations. With the need for Bibles replicated, monks would dedicate their time to scribing the latin texts of the Holy Books, copying them word by word. Fortunately for us, they often took it upon themselves to append the texts with [mostly] Church-sanctioned imagery in the form of small gold-gilded paintings among the pages. Medieval traditions castrated many of the skills and techniques of the great Classical era of ancient Greece and Rome, not yet revived until the Renaissance in the late 1400's. When we look back, the illustrations found in Illuminated Manuscripts , called Illuminations , take on a story-book, child-like appearance. With caricature-like depictions of soldiers, royals, faith leaders, angels, apostles and the like... and accompanied by ornation of floral patterns, animal figures, and medieval backgrounds, these painting carry on a sense of humor through the centuries that many find captivating. CULTURAL CONTEXT When we create emulations, studies and copies of past works, artist are attempting to channel the feel, the styles and the techniques of those past works. It is an act of homage, or paying respects to the legacy that these works contain. It is an embodiment of the past while in the present along with it's contemporary and current events. Copying a work can be livened to a dialogue with the original--- a pass of old technique, style and subject matter, to the here and now in our "modern" or "contemporary" time. It can carry all the weight of that culture. These could be seen as a commentary on the state of society; it's structures, it's reverence or preference for one over another, it's desire to show wealth through things like gold-gilding in an age of poverty. A feudal world seems easier to relate to seen through the eyes of an artist... visualizing the living people of the past as not too different from the our lives that we experience in the present. The human condition is pervasive through art, and expresses itself through a play between old and new expressions, in all forms of art in all regards, through the very act of imitation .

SANGUINE SYMBOLISM Crimson Legacy The life that flows through our veins was once a sacred substance, used in symbolism, rituals, rites and celebrations. The color red has a long history with mankind, with some of the oldest records of colors in written language being red. The body is inanimate without the mana of blood, a lifeforce in itself. Detail 1 and 2 of The Sacred Lifeforce , 2025. Pigment on paper. Through blood, our ancestors pass on the lifeforce that allows a continuation of legacy, a lineage of the bloodline. A biological heritage, that crimson symbol of family and blood-ties binds individuals, into a familial identity that exists beyond any one lifetime. The Sacred Lifeforce , 2025. EXPRESSION AND ACTION Heart and Mind The art medium of paint on paper is not only an expression, but a record of action. They physical effort put into creating an image is expressed on the paper or canvas, The motion, pressure, speed and focus is manifested in the application of paint to paper, while the emotion, intention, discovery and spirit of the work combines with those physical qualities to create expression. We often speak of our heart and mind as two forces of our spirit, soul or identity. How does the dialog between the two manifest in our actions, words, and thoughts, and can we channel that inner dialog to the benefit of culture or expression?

DURER'S ALLURE Geometric Sculpture One of my favorite works of all time, Melancholia I by Albrecht Dürer, is a deep trip into the psyche of the artist or thinker through allegory and symbolism. In a world of chaos, humankind attempts to find pattern and harmony, whether in science, mathematics, art or form. The thinker and creator is still an agent of inspiration, and in times they succumb to the torment of spiritual lethologica, a dry spell of creative flow. It can lead to torment and sorrow, it can lead to some of the greatest works of their time. This work, with it's magic cube of sudoku-style grid of numbers, to the mysterious geometric masonry resting in the background, has more to the image than just traditional symbolism and references to mythologies. This geometric shape, one that has appeared in other works, is an alluring form that seems to allude many references in other avenues of life. It has a peculiar shape of a triangular rhombohedron, composed of a triangle on top of a trapezoid, and resembles a droplet, petal or teardrop shape. I wanted to see if the shape could be realized in three dimensions, something I could replicate and hold in my hand. Thinking this would be easy, I gave the prompt to one of the more recent A.I. tools, providing the above image and direction to calculate the polygon's angles and the ratio of side lengths. It was able to analyze the shape efficiently enough, but couldn't calculate size without a rule of measurement. Instead I endeavored to do it the old school way, with pen and paper. I wanted to see if the shape could be realized in three dimensions, something I could replicate and hold in my hand. Thinking this would be easy, I gave the prompt to one of the more recent A.I. tools, providing the above image and direction to calculate the polygon's angles and the ratio of side lengths. It was able to analyze the shape efficiently enough, but couldn't calculate size without a rule of measurement. Instead I endeavored to do it the old school way, with pen and paper. Geometric sketches show the unfolded three dimensional form on paper. With a good base stencil, the form was cut out, and held together with tabs on some edges for adhesive. The first version was a bit flimsy, sketched onto grid paper, but folded successfully. The angles of the top and bottom triangle face had to be determined after the large edges were aligned. It was exciting to find the shape was so similar to the geometric form found in Melancholia I . The height to width ratio was a bit off from the reference yet when folded wasn't far off. The golden ratio was my initial goal to use, but it would have been even more elongated on the y-axis, so I kept somewhere in the middle. The second version, printed on a thicker printer paper, held as a stronger structure. A continuation of the grid onto the second version left a useful template guide for an illustration. Red ink accents the edges with a lattice work of droplet shapes, the geometric pattern a quick way to fill in the empty space and give it character. With the second version complete, this project pays homage to the original droplet sculpture feature on my site, and the works of the past. Melancholia Droplet (version 2) , 2024. Paper, glue, ink.

EGO AND SELF-AWARENESS Human Conditions Series What was it like to become self-aware? Do you remember when you first realized you were a human being, a person? Perhaps a first memory is the anchor allowing you to remember when you found your experience of conscientiousness? If only we had the ability to detect consciousness. Maybe a technology that detects the ideal brain waves for a conscious being, or by some cognition test that determines self-awareness that goes beyond the I.Q. and Turing test. Could we find a way to say, yes, this cat has a soul and a consciousness, but no, this skink lizard that the cat hunts, does not. It is a profound mystery of creation, as to how we gained the ability to see our reality and our role in it. Not just as a predictive set of behaviors and instincts, but one with foresight that is able to contemplate and be an active participant in said creation. Cogito ergo sum At some point in our evolution and creation, we became a self aware species. We are most differentiated from other organisms by our ability to reflect on ones "self" and imagine our self in other predicaments such as in the past, or the future. There may be a direct relationship with self-awareness, and the ability to understand time not just as a perception, but also understand its direct effect on an individual. Human Conditions Series: Cogito, 2024. Printed and multimedia collage, 16"x 11". With that self-discovery, comes the ego, the id, the dark selfish afflictions such as arrogance, anger or greed. The ego is the forbidden fruit, the knowledge of understanding, power and free will. Faiths gravitate towards this reverence for knowledge as a double edged sword, the cure and the poison. When one becomes self-absorbed, their ego and 'elevated' self no longer serves them, they serve their ego and help to further it's grip on a new conjured reality that revolves around it ... instead of their mind and ego serving them. Scriptures and mythological epics forewarn of the effects of a swollen ego, and the deep knowledge about the nature of man and the human mind was not overlooked by past civilizations and religions. Substances like the kykeon, ayahuasca, wine mixes and other hallucinogenic organic supplements have been supposed to have been shared in rituals and ceremonies, and maybe used for ages as tools to quell the ego. Practices of yoga and martial arts also become regiments to hone not only the body, but the mind and inner monologue that can be associated with that ego consciousness. How we see our selves has a real impact on how we see the world around us. Our reality is, partially if not all, created in our minds. We are in Plato's cave, with a dependence on perceptions and reasoning to interpret the patterns of that reality. Our ego is like a lens over our perceptions, one additional obstructions between us, that filters those shadows on the walls of the cave, finding preference in some over others.

Whether consciously or subconsciously, we are being manipulated to fit our paradigm of society, not always for our own safety or benefit.

MOTION AND STILLNESS The human figure is one of the most challenging of subject matters, and one I am no expert at. I often use subject matter that does not involve the human figure, and I've noticed that some art can lack a vitality because of it. Recently I endeavored to include more people, anatomy and faces into my art so as to bring more humanity, emotion and empathy to my work. Here are some sketches demonstrating the practice of capturing the human body, both in motion and in static poses. Male Figure 2 ; sketches, 2023. Graphite on paper. ON SKETCHING Finding a center of balance and understanding how to create the impression of weight, as well as proper proportions, is essential in creating the illusion of that form. Using varied weights of the line, having some thicker and some thinner, can suggest distance and curvature in the forms and help create depth without shading. Drawing is not just an additive artform, but subtractive too. Knowing when to omit features and when to accent them becomes a challenge in itself as the artist tries to deliver an image with the fewest necessary lines. These are just some of the tricks I've learned in the effort to create three dimensional figures onto two dimensional space. Male Figure 1 and 3 ; sketches, 2023. Graphite on paper.

A.I. MANIPULATION STUDY Exercise II What does it mean to take someone else's work... whether business idea, artwork, athletic move, or book concept...and adapt it? Is it plagiarism or theft? Is is paying homage or learning from the best? Is it Imitation or forgery? Or is it adopting and furthering its powerful symbolism. There is a reason they are called classics, because they epitomize the tried and true and demonstrate success. Cliche's and myths have roots in true success, and deviation is a form of natural evolution in the world thoughts, ideas and symbols. Grasping the Age of A.I. , 2023. A.I. manipulated scan of printed media screenshot. In the above image, a publicity shot of Marlene Dietrich from the film Morocco (1930) is transformed into a surreal image that suggests themes of time, aging and the cycle of celebrity. A.I. collaborates with artist prompts to create a glimpse behind the camera in an absurd reality. Dream-like qualities abound in the imagery that reveals new insights into a portrait, but leaves more questions than answers. ORIGINAL DEVIATION Some symbols die, some persist, and some evolve. Have you ever looked into the origin of the caduceus , that common emblem with a winged staff and snakes...or Buddhist swastika ? Through manipulation and reuse, these symbols and images deliver new meaning...regardless of the medium. When it comes to A.I., a new pandora's box of questions borrowing or stealing other artist's works, symbols, and other cultural styles leads to wondering whose art it ultimately is. Is A.I. art a tool to make use of? What happens if A.I.-rendered images are used as a reference photo or part of an artwork's design? Used to develop an idea or visual? That seems perfectly acceptable in some greater work. But what if the whole image is manipulated only using A.I. tools...does it lose it's integrity as original works of art? Can A.I. art be used as a means of referencing previous art, paying homage to traditional symbols, styles or imagery? Does the work deliver a new message? Does it reference the original not copy? Does it involve intentional manipulation? FILM MANIPULATION Film and Cinema has long played in the game of fair use , and the tropes and nods to previous films has become movie buff's trivia staple. From The Simpsons cleverly making satire out of every existing pop culture movie ad nauseum, to movies referencing classic lines of dialog, camera angles and stories. The cliche' is very effective if done to a degree that elevates the original and pays homage to it in a tasteful way. When every screen shot gets fed into an A.I. algorithm, does it not adopt those universal themes and symbols into new renderings of a similar spirit. So long as it is guided by human hand, it seems that the new version could have the potential to be newly realized variations of the content and symbols found in the samples. The value of it comes through a balanced demonstration of those original symbols and a spark of new insight (that for now, is the human input). Using a source of sample images, new versions can be rendered to surprising detail. You can see how they are convincing, but vary and have ambiguous differences that reveal the nature of A.I. art as derivative. Assorted Diedrichs , 2023, A.I. images created with Wombo Dreambot. But had an artist taken these images and collaged it with an original, it can create a new commentary on that imagery that both pays homage and reveals aspects of A.I. that can contribute to interesting new art. It is undeniable that A.I. art will have a disruptive effect on the world art-making. The ease of it is tempting, but from an artist perspective, can be a little underwhelming and lacks the real effort and discovery that making art can demand. If there is one kind of person you can put to the test, artists are the kind to take this new technology in stride and bring new avenues of creating that incorporate it in brilliant ways. Art generators will continue to have a particular quality that is limited, and I have faith that it will be the artists themselves that utilize it in new, never-envisioned ways. How does this change how we perceive the land we travel on? What happens when those forms of flat land we call maps are presented in new ways? Tension in the paper allows it to hold it's shape and defy gravity as the coil reaches above. Like the tower of Babylon, the spire creates a temporary balance that we foresee falling. Writing and language is essential to map reading, and the skill to read maps requires a certain kind of language. With symbols used to represent physical landscapes and features, as well as man-made paths, locations and imaginary borders, those symbols are representations and pictographs of the real thing. Give a map to someone who is unfamiliar and they are unlikely to understand the references and markings, let alone the directions they represent. Even today many people are growing up without the knowledge of how to navigate by map. The information we put on maps of paper has a unique way of informing us of our location, as well as our past, while paving a path forward for new destinations.
